EntwistleвЂ™s tone and sound was so rich with overtones and harmonics. Townsend also commented that EntwistleвЂ™s tone was akin to an organ. As Pete Townshend said, he believed he had the power to change the instrument and had control over how the bass was used and seen by others. Entwistle changed that by introducing the mindset of a lead guitar player to an instrument that never had such a mindset introduced to it. Bassists didnвЂ™t have much influence despite their need. It played quarter and eighth notes that were beholden to the direction and expression of the guitar player. Prior to John, bass was a supportive instrument.
